Self motivation speakers (also called self help speakers, life guru, life coach or peak performance speakers) are as prevalent as the thousands of self motivation books and resources that flood the market today.  These kinds of speakers, like the so-called “televangelists,” are able to draw a large crowd or following because they are able to fulfill a personal need of their audience or market  –  a practical way towards success, happiness and fulfillment.

Self motivation speakers, (who are usually also motivation book writers) may possess professional background like psychologists, sociologists, psychiatrist or behavioral therapists.  Then, there are those who have gained some form of respect and fame after experiencing an unusual life challenge, and successfully overcame it, making them credible sources of guidance as well.  No matter what their backgrounds are, self motivation speakers  are generally  regarded as experts in life, especially in goal-setting and decision-making.

The appeal of self motivation speakers is their affirmation of the existence of a formula for a satisfactory life.  They give an assurance that “there is a solution,” “it's never too late,” “you are in control,” and other similar buzz phrases in the self motivation “industry.”   This expertise on life, the  mastery of the art of persuasion and their natural charm and  charisma have helped many lives take a positive turn, which translates to millions of dollars for these speakers.

There was a time when some self motivation speakers are criticized as mere marketing hypes or holier-than-thou preacher types who have turned off a great number of people who sought guidance from these supposedly more enlightened individuals possessing “the gift.”

Fortunately today, the sincerity of motivational speakers are easily recognizable in the message they spread.  Instead of pushing for major personal changes and driving one's self to level up with the expectations of the society and “other people, ” effective self motivation speakers advocate for self-acceptance and coming to terms with one's own limitations as the first step to making peace with the inner self, which starts the whole self affirmation process that empowers the person to overcome struggles in real-life situations.

Famous motivational speakers today include Dr. Phil MacGrow(of the Oprah TV show fame), Indian-American inspirational writer Deepak Chopra,  American motivational expert Tony Robbins,  spiritual coach Eckhart Tolle and football coach-turned-life speaker Vince Lombardi.
