Self Help

Self help connotes relying on one's own willpower, determination and strength to accomplish a positive self goal.  It refers to actions toward self-guided improvements in any aspect of one's life (emotional, intellectual, financial or physical).  The concept of self help is associated with self reliance, independence and resourcefulness to succeed at an intended result or outcome.

Self help may be simple and practical as applied in day-to-day living and takes a short time to accomplish, like the DIY lifestyle (do-it-yourself) popular among homemakers, and makeovers which may be tangible like a physical makeover or intangible like a personality or emotional makeover.  Likewise, self help may also involve a bigger goal of a total positive turnaround in life (also called self development), which is accomplished in a longer time, through stages.

The concept of self help already appered in the old literary writings of masters and philosophers who affirm the dignity and power of man over things.  The basic tenet of “man is master” has morphed into popular motivational mantras like “God helps those who help themselves,” “When there's a will, there's a way,” and “Mind over matter, among other popular sayings.  The affirmation of man's self help capabilities makes the self help approach to life management a popular choice for an individual who seeks positive changes in life through easy-to-follow steps and workable stages.

A word of caution, though, about self help.  In cases where there is a regular pattern of stress, anxiety and depression in one's life, experts advise against relying on the self help approach.  Some people tend to do self help through self medications, or by looking to end their problems in self help books.  Note that these kinds of mental and emotional problems may require thorough diagnosis by medical professionals for the appropriate treatment.
